Rotary Cycle ride for Ukraine
Beverley to St Neots
Friday 10th to Sunday 12th June
With Bill Whitlow and Mike Robinson Lindum Lincoln RC
We did it. Three days cycling from Beverley in Yorkshire to St Neots in Cambridgeshire – a total of 190 miles in 3 days. As an extra bonus, we had the addition of a 20mph headwind for most of the ride.
Day 1 took us from Beverley to Lincoln – a distance of 60 miles, and we were joined by Bill Whitlow from Lindum Lincoln RC. Bill kindly offered us support, and refreshments at his home, before leading us into the Centre of Lincoln. The highlight of the day was when we had stopped to re-group, a young lady came over to us waving her Ukrainian passport and gave us thanks for our support for her country.
Day 2 took us down to Peterborough – a distance of 70 miles. On the way a cycling couple passed us while we were on a short break, and then returned a few minutes later to give us a donation. Passing motorists also gave us the thumbs up for our efforts.
Day 3 – the final day. The final distance to ride was another 60 miles. An easy start with a following wind, but only for a short time. We rode to the Fens down towards St Ives, and shortly after were joined by Moira Penney, District Assistant Governor, from St Ives RC. Moira joined us on the last leg to St Neots – it was a pleasure to have her ride with us.
At our final watering hole, we were once again approached by a young Ukrainian lady (see photo) who also thanked us for our efforts. These simple thanks meant so much to all of us that took part in the ride.
Our Fundraising page is still active, if any of you would like to make a donation, please visit the site. Note all the money raised will go to help the Ukrainian people during this very difficult time.
